Tuesday's Top Trailer: 2012

Welcome to a new weekly feature here at Movies with Abe, Tuesday's Top Trailer. One of my favorite parts about going to see movies is the series of trailers that airs beforehand and, more often than not, the trailer is far better than the actual film. Each week, I'll be sharing a trailer I've recently seen. Please chime in with comments on what you think of the trailer and how you think the movie is going to be.

2012 - Opening November 13, 2009

I saw this one before "Zombieland" this past Friday. It was the only non-horror trailer ("Legion" looks both terrible and terrifying), and this only definitely counts as a guilty pleasure. I'd advise you to watch the trailer before continuing with my description to see for yourself how absurdly silly it looks. It's actually a five-minute clip taken directly from the film, but it was shown as a preview along with other trailers, so I'll consider it as such. Please ignore the quick repeat at the very beginning - this is the only format in which I could find the clip. John Cusack is literally trying to outrun an earthquake that's literally seconds from ripping apart the ground he's driving on in a limo! And the scene with the airplane taking off looks like it's taken directly from "Independence Day," one of Roland Emmerich's previous films. He really likes destroying the world, evidenced also in "The Day After Tomorrow" (which I haven't seen). This certainly isn't the kind of world-ending event the Mayans had in mind when they predicted the end of the world in 2012. My question is, how can this movie possibly end? Will they simply circle the atmosphere endlessly in a plane as roads leap up and threaten to knock them from the sky? Either way, it's going to be a pretty insane, action-packed experience that will likely be awful but should be lots of fun. Why it's being released in November and in a year that's not 2012 is beyond me, but I think I'll see it.
