Oscar Winner Predictions: Best Live Action Short

The nominees:
The Door (C)
Nothing quite happens in this harrowing and sad depiction of Chernobyl.
Instead of Abracadabra (B+)
A magician consistently flops in front of his parents in this outrageously funny film.
Kavi (C)
Poverty and child labor are depicted in India in this movie that boasts no particularly impressive facets of filmmaking.
Miracle Fish (B-)
A slow but entertaining short is offset by an unexpected and disturbing ending.
The New Tenants (B+)
Lengthy conversation, violence, and zaniness are present aplenty in this wickedly bizarre and entertaining farce.

Previous winners: Toyland, The Mozart of Pickpockets, West Bank Story, Six Shooter, Wasp
Who should win: Either “The New Tenants” or “Instead of Abracadabra”
Who will win: It’s possible that it could be one of the serious films like “The Door” or “Kavi,” but the audience response to The New Tenants at an Oscar shorts screening makes it seem like it’s the one to beat.
