Tuesday’s Top Trailer: The Tree of Life

Welcome to a weekly feature here at Movies with Abe, Tuesday's Top Trailer. One of my favorite parts about going to see movies is the series of trailers that airs beforehand and, more often than not, the trailer is far better than the actual film. Each week, I'll be sharing a trailer I've recently seen. Please chime in with comments on what you think of the trailer and how you think the movie is going to be.

The Tree of Life – Opening May 27, 2011

I first saw this trailer, like many others, before “Black Swan” when I saw it in theatres about a month ago. With all of the Oscar precursor hoopla going on now, I had neglected to write about it in favor of the films that were actually coming out in the calendar year of 2010. This long-delayed film from director Terrence Malick, who has only made four films prior to this over the course of thirty years, looks immensely intriguing, to say the least. Malick’s last effort was the Pocahontas-retooling “The New World,” which wasn’t my cup of tea, and before that, the Oscar-nominated Best Picture contender “The Thin Red Line” in 1998. Now, he’s making a film that looks entirely visually astounding and completely mesmerizing. I feel like I’m going to be sucked into a hypnotic trance just by watching it. It reminds me of two Brad Pitt-related films, one that he was supposed to star in (“The Fountain”) and one he actually did star in (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”). I (blissfully) have no idea what the film is about after watching the trailer, yet I’m completely drawn in by the cinematography and the fact that Brad Pitt continues to look younger in each of his successive projects. This is the kind of film that could be a monumental failure, but from the looks of this trailer, I’m hopeless to resist, and May isn’t too far away. If the film doesn’t get any more delayed before then, I’m going to remain quite excited, mystified, and prepared for this sure-to-be-captivating experience.

Have you seen any of Malick's other work? I was no great fan of "The New World", but his first two films (especially "Badlands") are both utterly magnificent.

Nope. Only "The New World," which I despised. Something else I'll get to someday, I'm sure!
