Golden Globe Musings: Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical

Golden Globe nominations for this year will be announced in just a few weeks, so here’s a survey of the contenders and the most likely predictions at this time. Weigh in with your thoughts, and let me know if I’ve left off anything important. A reminder that the Globes are wildly unpredictable and that it is still a bit early to gauge the reception or awards potential of a number of the so-called “contenders” at this point.

Last year’s nominees:
Amy Adams (Big Eyes)
Emily Blunt (Into the Woods)
Helen Mirren (The Hundred Foot Journey)
Julianne Moore (Maps to the Stars)
Quvenzhane Wallis (Annie)

The actress with an immediate boost here is Jennifer Lawrence (Joy), whose film is more serious than most in this race and who has received a handful of nominations over the past five years. Next up are two comediennes at very different points in their careers - Lily Tomlin (Grandma) and Amy Schumer (Trainwreck). Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van) and Meryl Streep (Ricki and the Flash) shouldn’t have a hard time getting nominated given history of being recognized. Melissa McCarthy (Spy) could show up, as could Blythe Danner (I’ll See You in My Dreams), Anne Hathaway (The Intern), and Sandra Bullock (Our Brand is Crisis).

Current predictions:
Jennifer Lawrence (Joy)
Amy Schumer (Trainwreck)
Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van)
Meryl Streep (Ricki and the Flash)
Lily Tomlin (Grandma)
