Here we have one of only two technical categories in which “Avatar” is not nominated (and wouldn't have been), allowing several lone nominees to break through, including one-time Best Picture contender “Bright Star” and the French film “Coco Before Chanel.” All of these wardrobe achievements are period pieces, and the extravagance of the latter three (alphabetically) should put those three ahead in this very contested race.
