Golden Globe Nominees: Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical

My predictions: 3/5, picking two Roberts over two Depps
Who’s missing: Robert Duvall (Get Low), Robert Downey Jr. (Due Date), Jim Carrey (I Love You Phillip Morris)

I’m proud of calling Kevin Spacey (Casino Jack) for a nomination, and it really is a fun performance. Jake Gyllenhaal (Love and Other Drugs) and Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version) managed to get in despite their films not being recognized for Best Motion Picture. Robert Duvall (Get Low) getting snubbed is a huge blow, though it’s perfectly possible that voters just didn’t know which category made sense for him to be nominated in (even if one was pre-selected for them), and last year’s winner Robert Downey Jr. (Due Date) is also absent. Instead, we get two Johnny Depp performances, for “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Tourist,” both of which made it in for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical as well. These are Depp’s ninth and tenth nominations, and it really feels like he gets nominated for everything.

Who could win? Sort of up in the air without Duvall here. Spacey would be a cool choice, and with Depp in the running twice to cancel himself out, I’ll go with Giamatti.
What does this mean for the Oscar race? Nothing. Only Duvall would actually be in the running. Spacey is way too much of a longshot.
