Golden Globe Nominees: Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama

My predictions: 4/5, missing Maguire
Who’s missing: Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker)

Four of these nominees – Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man), and Morgan Freeman (Invictus) – were fairly secure. The fifth slot was up for grabs, and instead of either Jeremy Renner or Hal Holbrook, the surprising choice was Tobey Maguire (Brothers). It’s interesting that he was categorized as lead and that it was he rather than Natalie Portman who got nominated. I have yet to see the film (now I’ll make sure I do), so I can’t offer much commentary other than to say that the other four nominees are all deserving. Additionally, any of them could win.

Who could win? I’d narrow it down to Bridges and Firth, and for the moment I’d go with Bridges.
What does this mean for the Oscar race? Nothing. The aforementioned four are good, and the fifth slot is still a wild card. Renner should be able to ride the wave of his film and get nominated, even if he’s relatively unknown.
