SAG Predictions: Best Actress in a Supporting Role

For the second year in a row, the Screen Actors Guild announces its picks one day before Golden Globe nominations are revealed, which makes it considerably tougher to predict the nominees without that helpful handicap of knowing ten likely contenders beforehand. Without knowing all that much, here are my best guesses for SAG’s five inclusions in this category. Check back on Wednesday for detailed reactions by category.

Last year’s nominees:
Berenice Bejo (The Artist)
Jessica Chastain (The Help)
Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids)
Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs)
Octavia Spencer (The Help)

The best bet in this category is past nominees Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables), and there are a number of other past nominees that might join her. If voters don’t dislike her, Sally Field (Lincoln) is in, and Amy Adams (The Master) probably is too. Helen Hunt (The Sessions) may earn her first solo nomination in fifteen years, provided that voters don’t take issue with the fact that she hasn’t done much in the interim. Maggie Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) has plenty of “Downton Abbey” buzz going for her, plus a lead role in another film. Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook) could earn her first nomination, as could Ann Dowd (Compliance). From among a crowded ensemble, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham Carter, and Samantha Barks (Les Miserables) could all show up too.

Predicted nominees:
Amy Adams (The Master)
Ann Dowd (Compliance)
Sally Field (Lincoln)
Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables)
Helen Hunt (The Sessions)
