SAG Nominees: Best Actress in a Supporting Role

My predictions: 3/5, picking Adams and Dowd over Kidman and Smith
Who’s missing? Amy Adams (The Master), Ann Dowd (Compliance), Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook)

This category delivered the most truly surprising nominee of all - Nicole Kidman (The Paperboy) in a film I’ll admit I had never even heard of. It’s actually directed by Lee Daniels, who did “Precious,” and will be on DVD less than a week before this ceremony. Kidman’s placement is utterly mind-boggling. Maggie Smith (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) earned two solo nominations and two ensemble nominations today, and she’s likely to earn three individual bids at tomorrow, quite a feat at age 78. Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) is nominated, as expected, and joined by two SAG veterans both plentifully nominated for TV work but received only their second solo film nominations, Sally Field (Lincoln) and Helen Hunt (The Sessions). I can’t imagine Kidman will also earn a Golden Globe nod, so stay tuned for tomorrow’s nominees in this category.

Who could win? I think it goes to Hathaway for what’s sure to be a show-stopping performance.
