Oscar Predictions: Best Film Editing

This year, Oscar nominations will be announced on Monday, January 13th. I’ll be offering detailed predictions in most of the major categories.

Last year’s nominees: BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Vice

This year’s locks: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Very likely: Ford v Ferrari, Parasite

Possible: Joker, Knives Out, The Irishman, Marriage Story, Jojo Rabbit, 1917

Unlikely: Avengers: Endgame

The rundown: This category has offered up some shocking snubs in recent years, including my predicted lock “Roma” and “A Star is Born” last year, and “Get Out” and “Lady Bird” the year before that. The American Cinema Editors have two separate categories, dramatic and comedy, totaling ten nominees. From them, I think that Ford v Ferrari and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood are likeliest. I’d bet on Parasite and Joker next, with Knives Out likely to round out the list. That leaves The Irishman and Marriage Story out from the drama list, along with Jojo Rabbit from comedy and the other two, The Farewell and Dolemite Is My Name, that I don’t think stand any chance. It’s possible that 1917, which is billed as one shot, shows up here, and there’s also a potential chance that Avengers: Endgame proves popular enough to be nominated here.

One possible crazy scenario: The acclaimed Apollo 11 becomes the third documentary ever nominated in this category.

Forecasted winner: Though I don’t agree at all, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood seems likeliest based on this predicted lineup.
